Snowkite Swim Club 2025! While scouting ice before a storm earlier this season I found a thin patch. It was unusual in what I usually see in regards to thin ice. Apart from a slight change in the pitch of the sound of my edges there was little indication that the ice was different from the rest of the lake. Visually, the camera picks up some change in color but I didn't see it.

In the last couple decades the ice here in New England has been changing. This isn't simply my observation as someone who both recreats and works on the ice but also many an older ice fisherman or snowmobiler who have been out on the ice every year for the last 50+ years. The ice in the last two seasons has been extremely unusual and finding safe ice has been a bit more work than years past.

With even minimal caution, mid-winter odds of having an incident like this are extremely low. But if you rack up thousands of miles and hours on the ice eventually the odds are you will go through. Not an "if" situation but "when". Early and late season kiting presents the highest risk. But if you are well equipped and prepared, these instances aren't as extreme as one might think. I was wearing water resistant clothing (waterproof zippers etc.) A PFD, rescue picks etc... and, I had a 2.5m Flysurfer Peak 6 and plenty of wind to pull me to safety.

This said a local kite skier, Jim Cline, has logged enough kiteski miles to surpass the circumference of the earth and never went through.

Side note, the Go Pro had a bad battery so it shut off before I got out. :-(

I will say, losing a ski was a bit of a concern. Fortunately it got wrapped up in the broken ice and I was able to swim to it and recover it. :-)

Never ceases to amaze me how well that little 2.5m kite can pull.
